Richard Hart the managing director of “Disturbance” an upbeat advertising company here in Durban, KZN approached me to come up with a concept for a new reception desk for their offices. The building is an old Victorian colonial double storey house that has been left untouched on the outside but transformed inside into a modern open plan space with bridges linking mezzanine working areas furnished in a slick minimalist style. My first though was to do an old fashioned reception desk to blend with the oustide of the building, to look as if it was the only piece of furniture that they kept from the old house … This idea developed to making a reception desk that referenced the modern concept of interactivity of flat screens and advertising, but to create it in a 20th century mechanical style with gears/handles – with the overall look to be that of an old piano that Frank Lloyd Wright might have designed. To allow Hart and his team of graphic designers to play a part, I had them execute 3 different designs to suit the 3 faces of the desk. There are a lot of corner computer desks on the market, and most are similar styles to each other with small variations. A lot of them are modular so that you can add various components as you need. Recently as I was looking around, I discovered some really good manufacturers, and some were a bit more unique than others.

One of these companies is Kendall Howard, who has a performance series of corner computer desks specially designed as LAN work stations. One that I think is clever is CUBE in-a-box, perhaps just because of their name. They actually manufacture cubicles, which of course almost always includes a corner computer desk. They offer five different configurations that are fast to install for an affordable price.
