After hurricane Katrina destroyed their community and halted their way of life, eighth graders from Alba Middle School in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, took to the streets armed with cameras to document their lives through the black and white images they captured. Assisted by middle schoolers from Elm Place Middle School in Highland Park, Illinois, the children processed their emotions with photography and poetry. This video features photos and poetry from the “eyes of the storm: a community survives after Katrina” photo and book project and includes art and poetry submitted by middle schoolers from both Alba and Elm Place Middle Schools.
